Taitonga´s Atlantikpassage - Teil 1
Halbzeit - Gemischte Gefühle!
Summary der ersten 12 Tage
  • Wasser, Wasser, Wasser

  • Because I was not able to send this letter before we left (and have problems with sending emails) I post it onto our blog and hope Roger has a look on it before we reach Antigua

    27.02.2012, 00:28 - "Letter to Roger" (Christian)

    Dear Roger,

Yesterday I downloaded your blog (http://www.sailblogs.com/member/itsasunnyday/) and just read it some minutes ago. It was an interesting lecture. Congratulations for your passage to Graciosa singlehanded! These were surely not the easiest conditions.

We left St. Cruz de Tenerife yesterday at 14:00 and are on our way to the caribbean. The first days are maybe the hardest? I like it not too much but I am still ok, but very tired. I try to give the watch to Dagmar at 01:30 so she had 4h rest. Because we have the wind NE 15kn nearly from astern I will go on the foredeck and attach the spinakerboom to the genoa, to get a more stable foresail. That will take at least 20 minutes because I will set the boom between 2 wires going from the side to the top of the mast (I do not know the english-word for these stays ("Wanten" in german)). One pair of these wires are standing before the mast (not exactly beside the mast) => very good for the maststability, but bad for setting up a spinnakerboom => it can only run freely up to 70 dregrees and our genoa needs 90/95°).
Before doing that we will shift because now we are running 175 degrees. I wanted to do a bit south because of the wheaterforecast and stay away from the active vulcano-area SW of Hierro. Shifting will take a bit as well because we have to roll in the genoa because it can not go on the other side while jibing, because of the second forestay.
When the wind catches the genoa after a bigger swell the whole boat is not only shaking but realing hoppeling like a rabbit for 1 or 2 second => very wired (I duno if the word hoppeling exists in the oxford-dictionary but it is so nice, that it should). The wind increased in the last minute and we are doing about 6 knots while rolling a bit uncomfortably.
I found out that our new Asus-Laptop shuts down after 20 minutes and than looses the signals of the AIS and the GPS => That´s bullshit (even more because I have set the powersaving-adjustments to never shut down while connected! => I just try to implement the same settings while under battery but I think nothing will change).

AIS is still great, it just showed me an frightliner which we will pass in 60 min with approx. 2nm CPA.
Our Raymarine-Selfsteering is working fine, but eats too much Amps/h => Our battery is down to 82% => but I can not help it
=> Our windvane is not working to our liking. I think I will call Mr. Förthmann tomorrow for assistence.

Just after dinner Dagmar mentioned, that she is now not too sure if she will continue our trip after reaching the carribean. I can understand her very well because I had the same thoughts! Until now our voyage was extremly demanding and the ratio happy days / neutral days / bad days or just work / fear/ fun is not too positive (Rabat was positive). At the moment I can not imagine to live on a boat for 10 years like Vera and John. I am not used to the Atlantic-waves and I like sailing in calm conditions much more. The best sailingground I ever discoverd is the Stockholm Archipelago (dispite the underwaterrocks and thousands of islands I think it is easy to navigate there, as long as you have good visibility!).

Anyway, the time on Tenerife was nice and we took our time to discover the island, which is nice. If you go there I can recommend a tour
    - to the Teide and a 2h walk the "Los Roques"
    - visiting the far north of the islandmountains Anaga with a very nice walk at Cruz del Carmen (The smell of the woods is fantastic!)
    - On the westcoast a cave formed out of a magma-stream => The cueva del viento => you should call them for a reservation (992 815 339) because they do only 4 or 5 tours a day with max 14-16 people. => Very good commentaries and explanations! (To reach the office is maybe not possible by public bus, but maybe they can collect you somewhere => walking up I consider mad, because it is going up and up very steep).

I am not unhappy to leave Spain. We lived up to now about 4 months in Spain. It was a hard time to get things organized. And I think many people are not too often very friendly, but on the other hand we discovered some very friendly and helpful people! What we recognized is that the people do not smile very often (same like in Frankfurt in the S-Bahn with all the commuters travelling to work).

Best wishes from Dagmar and hope to CU
    Christian

    so sauber geht´s wieder

    26.02.2012, 19:00; Sonntag - "Atlantik 1" (Dagmar)

AIS "Not under command", was sehr seltsam ist => Vielleicht ein Nachfahre vom fliegenden Holländer?

28.02.2012, Dienstag - "Computer and Mountain" (Christian)

11:30 I am still very tired and I do not know if I slept, but I think I did! During my watch I felt very apatic and I did not went for a sharp lookout every 15 minutes! Bad, but I think the risk to meet another ship is nearly Zero (so not too bad).

Our little Asus-Laptop had a couple of very severe crashes (bluescreen) and OpenCPN our Chartprogramm lost its settings and do not recognize the GPS-Mouse => we have redundant systems so it is not a problem, but I have to deinstall and reinstall the programms ones more which makes me not happy).

15:00 I did all the reinistalling, but the same: it crashed again => maybe the driver of the GPS is having a problem; i do not know => I give up for now and try to get another driver in Antigua.

One of our few guests far from land

    19:00 14knots N-Wind 1m waves course 245°
I discovered there is a seamountain in our course "Banco Endeavor" (a bit late, because of the navigation with the electronics (on big scale)!). That is a very steep mountain going from ~3.500m up to 150m and drops to 3.500+ again.
We had two options: Going on 270 deg and be away from it about 10 miles, but on the windwardside or go on 180 deg and pass the mountain 8 nm on the east with the wind. We decided to go for the second option. It appeared to us to be safer. I do not know how the waves will be in the windward, because despite the wind, there is the canary-current with ~1 knot setting with ~230° onto the mountain => I do not know how deep the current reaches, but I expect a couple of hundred meteres, which means a big wall of neverending water going to SW and than hitting the mountain, so it only can go up or around the mountain which will cause some turbolences. So I think even in this calm conditions it could be uncomfortable!

22:00 We are on the back of the mountain 14nm to leeward and the sea became a bit "rocky".
24:00 The sea calmed down a bit, but the wind increased.

    29.02.2012; Wednesday - "Another day" 24°35´N 020°11´W (Christian)

09:00 We are doing around 245° at 6 knots with only the genoa, halfwind. Our Windpilot works, but it is steering +/- 15 degrees which is maybe due to the waves 2-3m with 19kn wind. A part of our protection of the lower side of the genoa (shitty "repaired" by sunsails.es) is ripped of! We have to attach a patch as soon as that is possible! The boat itself is fine.
There was one boat at the horizon in the last 24h, and that´s it. Until now we made about 1/3 of the distance to the Cape Verdes! That is nearly nothing => Plenty to go!

Dagmar takes good care about us. She baked a cake and two breads. I discoverd I do not eat much while on navigation (But I have still some "reserves" carrying with me).

This night I sleept (with earplugs)!! That´s good! But I am still very, very tired. My cold is still working fine, but a little bit better. Still sneezing, headache and my nose does not get enough air.
Just now I do not like this way of sailing. It takes so much power out of me and giving little rewards.
Today we have to get a new weatherforecast. I have to connect the laptop with the satellit-telephone and go to the internet => I hope it works!

13:00 We connected to the Internet via Iridium => it worked. I tryed to download a file from ugrib.us => 280kb! (It was so big because I selected a grid of 0,5deg) => after downloading 70% it colapsed! I selected anotherone with 55kb => done! The whole airtime was 20 minutes for one weatherforecast => I have to ask Dagmar again to try once more to get the informations via SingleSideBand (which until now was never useable)!
The weatherprediction is without surprises 16 to 24 knots NE turning to East further of the coast. That´s ok. Now we have NNE 20knots. Actualy so much N and so strong is not predicted. We found out that the weatherforecast (10m above the sealevel) gives normaly a bit less windspeed, than we measure in our mast (16m)!

14:00 Our powerconsumption and -production is actual more or less neutral. In the moment we get between 3 and 5A into the Batteries. Enough wind for the windgenerator and sun. But because we are on 78% of the capacity we have to run the motor at night for 1 or 1,5 h to get it up to around 85-90%.

    03.03, 19:00; Saturday - "Weatherchange predicted" (Christian) 23°30´N 029°11´W, Kurs 270° 6kn

I downloaded with Ugrib another forecast (55kb / 4 minutes).
The weatherprediction is surprising! The wind is predicted to stay E for the night and calm down to 5kn from E-NE on wednesdaynight. 5kn means not a sailable wind and not far enough wind to produce energy aswell very most likely old absolute uncomfortable swell!!
We jibed and are takeing a course of 230° do go more south, where the windspeed is predicted to be better. I want to go to 20°N in the next days => I do not want to becalmed!

    04.03, 10:00 - "Sunday" (Christian) 23°30´N 029°11´W, Kurs 250° 6kn

"Like ice on a sunday" - the advertisment came to my mind writing the headline; an ice would be nice but where to get? => Not everything is perfect.
Since 8:45 we are loading the batteries coming from 66% (loading with 66Ah) now up to 77% (16Ah). I stop the engine and hope the wind increases a bit, so the Aerogen is doing a bit more, unfortunately the sky is covered with high clouds, so I do not expect the solarpanels to work very much.
I will try to do nearly nothing today but rest! Writing this it comes to my mind that I have todo the motorcheck and want to do some maintance/cleaning outside... (We will see).

Our watchkeeping changed dramatically, compared to sailing at the coast. I do not feel bad going up only every hour to have a lookout. The chances to see another boat are like wining in a lottery (The only but important difference is: Here I participate (and take the risk / in Germany I do not play)).
Dagmar slept very bad tonight and was in a bad mood handing over her watch. I will try to do some nice breakfast, when she wakes up. She does not like the waves but mostly I think she is taking all easier than me. Yesterday there was a sentence "if we go further on than the caribbean..." and "the inner US-Coastalway could be interesting..." so everything is open...
We will decide what to do after ~two weeks arriving in Antigua.
I just discovered I only have a frenchguide of Antigua: That will be a challenge!
I think the motto of Antigua "Each Endeavouring, All Achieving" ( „Jeder strengt sich an, alle haben Erfolg“) will be liked by a lot by the guys I made my systemic-course with.
I like aswell that Antigua (80.000 inhabitants) is an independent country, but the queen (of England) is still Number 1!
I tried to calm down the signals of the GPS-Mouse: It shows me 3-5 new headings and speeds every single second, which means our speed is changing from 4.0 to 5.2 to 4.8 to 6.8 to 7.1. I wanted to get a setting with more useful data every 3 seconds, but I did succseed (I wonder how this word is spelled; I know I did it wrong! This sucks).

    Rauschefahrt
18:30 We are sailing between 200° and 210° halfwind with 20knots wind from east. The waves calmed down to about 2m. We have 2 reefs in the mainsheet and reefed the Genoa 4-5 times. Our speed varies between 7 and 9,5knots. Taitonga is behaving very well going topspeed.
It looks like we are entering a new timezone. The sunset is approximately one hour later than in Tenerife (still 3 Timezones to go until Antigua (UTC-4h)).
19:00 We took down the mainsheet for the night to reduce speed and increase safety => still 6,5 knots, but not so stressy in the movements.

    Schauckelei

    We found out, that:
    - one solarpanel got too loose and was disturbing the windpilot (that´s fixed)
    - the BB-line of the windpilot for going leeward worked much harder than the Stb one (Dagmar changed the direction of the line (attaching the end to the shackle where the beginning is) and cut of the outworn bit)
    - there are 3 little "pinneedle"-holes in the Mainsail (only to see against the sun => we will check in Antigua)
    - the hatch of the forecabin is leaking, when the foredeck is washed by a roller (it did not leak while watering the boat with a hose) => I tightend the bolt of the Handle!
    - there is is a sharp, hard, short, metallic bang near or inside the mast, like something moves 0,5mm under high pressure. I was sitting near the mast for a while and trying with my hands and ears to find out where it came from => I haven´t found out (to stop this sound could be important). (08.03: I did not heared it again)
    - there is a strange metalic sound from the foredeck (I hope it is some chain from the anchorlocker)
=> I will take care of it tomorrow.

    05.03, 08:45 - "Monday" (Christian) 21°00´N 031°48´W, Kurs 205° 6,5kn

    16:30 I am in a bad mood!
A few hours ago the steering started squeaking like it will die in the next days. I tryed to get some Grease on but no improvement!
I downloaded a new grib-weatherfile which looks even worse than the one 2 days before: It will be very calm between Wednesday evening and Thursday noon. It doesn´t matter how far south we go but the strategy is still good, because further north the calm situation will be wider which means longer to pass!
The ugly sharp, hard, short, metallic bang noise near the mast disappeared.
The strange metalic sound from the foredeck came from a piece of chain in the anchorlocker => I secured it.
If I had a choice I would prefered to be somewhere else.

19:00 We have gusts up to 25knots and the wind changes directions 10 to 15°. Our course is "swinging" between 180° and 210° with speeds between 5 and 8 knots . The sun is shining so it´s ok. The waves are sometimes very calm and then some big rollers are coming => I thought the conditions on the Atlantik would be more stable!
The Windpilot just gave a crack-noise and the crossbar went a bit foreward => too much tension in the system.
We adjusted the Lines of the Windpilot and the squeaking disappeared!

23:00 The waves are not too big, but in disorder and the boatmovements are very uncomfortable. Dagmar changed course with the windpilot about 20° from the wind, so we are now very near tailwins, and the boat behaves much more better!

    06.05 Tuesday 10:00 - "18°52N, 32°55 W" (Christian)

I woke up with an headache. I do not know where it comes from!
We started the engine once more to load the batteries from 63% up to 75%. The motor is only working without the propeller moving, so the windvanesteering is not disturbed. If the weaterforecast is correct we do have to do some motoring this night to go on and to stabilise the boat against the old swell. We will jibe in an couple of hours so we are not going to far south 18°00 will do. Antigua is on 17°00.

    07.03, 08:00; Wednesday - "18°01´ N; 34°25´ W; Kurs 255° 7kn" (Christian)

Now we are 540 nm east of the Cape Verdes and 1600 west of Antigua. Most probably we are near the point of no return, where it needs the same amount of time to go back or proceed.
The sea is calm, mostly 1m. I expect the sunrise in 1 hour. I am a bit boared.

Without Motor we would do 4knots which is ok, but we are motoring to load the batteries (I think 1 of 5 is not working properly). They went down quickly because the Aerogen was not producing a lot power because the light winds (12-14knots true) and the course with the wind from nearly astern which results in an appearing wind 8 to 10 knots (./.boatspeed). The Input in the batteries decreases sharply, we start with 65Ah at 2000rpm and it goes continously down to 10Ah after 90 minutes (because the batteries can not take the load so quick without boiling).
The diesel-consumption for loading the batteries (with or without propellering) is low: ~3L/p.h. (Our fueltank is nearly full with ~400L).
Dagmar and I are thinking about improving the energymanagement of the yacht to be independend and to get the power we need most easy.
    - Option 1 is to get a little, cheap generator only to load the battieries while anchored because we do expect sun but not much wind in a sheltered place. Disadvantages: No loading during navigation, noisy, fuel=>benzin, Storage only in the dry saillocker and running on deck possible.
    - Option 2 is to get a bigger, expensive diesel-generator which could run all the time. Disadvantages: Where to store? I can only think of getting it into our cockpitlockers or maybe the space above the mainengine, but both places are very small.
    - Option 3 is to get another solarpanel. Disadvantages: Where to store? I can only think of attaching them removabale to the side of the boat like wings. Some electronic has to be changed (not a big deal), because the system is for 140Watt.
    - Option 4 is to get an fuelcell which could maybe find place in a cockpitlocker. Disadvantages: 3rd type of fuel, which could be not easy to get in the pacific and which is extremly inflamable (In Europe that would be my favorite)
    - Option 5 is to change the batteries from lead to AGM to get a much quicker load while running the engine (The second alternator we have would be more efficent). Disadvantages: cost and maybe they do not fit in the battery-compartment.
=> I do not know now what to do. Just now I would go for 1 or/and 5. We may decide in Antigua

Am roten Kreis waren wir am 06.03

07.03; Mittwoch - "grau in grau" (Dagmar)
