Einkaufen, viel Basteln, sehr viel länger hier als geplant, nette Leute, Karneval

Summary: 11.04.2012 - "Antigua nach St. Martin" (Christian) Wir haben Antigua verlassen, um uns die nördlicher gelegenen Insel St.Martin/Sint Maarten anzuschauen und da es eine zollfreie Zone ist, dort die Batterien und anderes einzukaufen. Ich hatte uns für den 10.04 ausklariert und dann Sibylle und Eckhard von der SY "Brigo" kennengelernt und uns verquatscht => wir hatten sowieso keine Lust loszufahren. (Dagmar: Die beiden haben eine Nespresso-Maschiene anbord! Vielleicht kann ich so eine ja auch bekommen, damit mein Mangel an gutem Kaffee hier ein Ende hat...[Christian: Das Teil braucht zwischen 1300 und 1500 Watt bei 220V (ca. 6,8A) und würde sehr viel Ampere (ca. x 20) aus den Batterien saugen!] (Dagmar: Dann eben nicht!)) Da das Datum der Ausklarierung keinen störte (so wie es auch keinen interessiert, ob dabei noch Abgaben und Gebühren für das Ankern in Falmouth Harbour bestehen) sind wir erst am 11ten kurz vor Dunkelheit gestartet. Bei der Überfahrt nach St. Martin war ich total fertig und froh, dass Dagmar die erste Wache übernahm. Schönes Segeln, leider sehr dunkel und Wind direkt von hinten, so dass wir mal wieder vor dem Wind kreuzen mußten: Wir fuhren einfach an St. Martin rechts vorbei und bogen dann links ab, so dass wir noch etwas von Anguilla sehen konnten => sieht sehr flach und nicht so interessant aus. St. Martin sieht schön aus, sehr kompakt und hügelig, grün.  Samstag, 14.04 - "Einkaufen und Wetter" - (Dagmar) Es gibt hier alles an Essbarem zu kaufen, allerdings sind die Preise teilweise astronomisch! Zumindest haben wir ein gutes Brot mit knuspriger dunkler Kruste gefunden! Sonst gibts hier ja nur die Wahl zwischen weißem oder hellbraunem Schwammbrot. Geschmacklich ohne Kommentar. Aber wie in von Frankreich beeinflussten Gegenden nicht anders zu erwarten ist die Wein- und Spirituosenabteilung gross und vielfältig. Wir haben die zwei wichtigen Schiffsausrüster besucht und auch die zwei größten Supermärkte. Leider ist hier die Unsitte verbreitet, das Innere der Supermärkte extrem runterzukühlen. Wenn man dann noch einige Zeit vor der Fleischtheke verbringen muss, ist man danach halb tiefgefroren. Draußen ist es wegen des immer wieder aufkommenden Regens schwül warm. Seit Jutta abgeflogen ist, haben wir viel mehr Regen, meist regnet es nie lange am Stück, dafür immer mal wieder den ganzen Tag. So wird einem das Salzwasser nach der wie immer feuchten Dinghyfahrt gleich aus den Kleidern gespült, aber wehe man muss in den Supermarkt... Die Grenze mitten im Wasser der Lagune zwischen "Frankreich" im Norden und "Niederlande" im Süden ist vor Ort augenscheinlich sehr gut zu erkennen: Im niederländischenTeil liegen ca. 5 Yachten vor Anker (es fällt Liege- und Brückengebühr sowie Papierkram an) und im französischen liegen ca. 150 Yachten (Kosten = 5,20€ einmalig für die Einklarierung). Mit dem Dinghy oder Autos kann man bequem die Grenze überqueren.  Unser Liegeplatz Saturday / Sunday - "Stress / Distress" - (Christian) 23:00 Oh Boy, that is scary! We have around 6 to 7 Bft and about 50cm! Waves, with white breaking heads !, since nightfall (which was forecasted to come a bit later), but that is not was scares me! Our anchor is holding fine and our electronic anchorwatch is saying we are stable on our position (until now), so for us my feelings are ok! I really rely on the 30 kg Bügelanchor driven (and dive-checked) into the weedy-sandbottom on 2,4m depth with 25 m chain out (even if it is only 20m to our next neigbour behind us, so we can not give much more chain, which is not nice!). Our third-anchor the Brittany is ready to set in the cockpit with 80m-rope and the key is in the engine-panell for a quick start! French Weatherforecast
Here are the details of the night (or why I did not go to bed / or what scared me): 20:15 Someone (MRCC Fort de France?) broadcasted a Pan-Pan-Message, that a sailingvessel of 10 to 12m is drifting through Marigot-Bay. 20:30 "Aait Vedan" sends a Pan-Pan-Message: They went on the rocks in Marigot-Bay outside the lagoon beside the bridge 22:40 "Nalito" shoots 2 red flares beeing on the rocks near the airport inside the lagoon 22:35 "Parahito" is drifting and during heaving up the anchor they were catching the anchor of another boat and now having an anchormess which possible means two boats may drift 23:30 "Aait Vedan" an 40ft Alu-Boat is towed near the harbourentrance and anchored (It was said it is not wise to go into the harbour at these conditions!) 00:15 Someone broadcasts: "26 knots now and 35knots as a peak forecasted for 02:00 am" 00:50 "Matador" offered help to "Paharito" to lay a second anchor => they might wait until sunrise. 01:00 The SAR-Boat "Rescue01" has an engineproblem while approaching "Nalito" 01:20 Mayday from a french 13 meter-boat near the Hotel "Pirate" asking to be evacuated with the kids 01:56 Pan-Pan "Aait Vedan" termine 02:00 "Recue01" is alongside "Nalito" and tries to communicate with the MRCC, but the connection is broken and unstable => They try telephoning but they can not get through 02:14 "MRCC": Mayday "french 13 meter-boat" termine 02:16 "MRCC": Mayday-relay "Nalito" termine 02:26 "Nalito": Thank you very much for the rescue!" 02:37 "Maisie Rose": Drifting single-handed to the end on the airport-runway in the lagoon 02:45 "Maisie Rose": Dutch Costgard gives assistance. Thank you 03:00 The gusts are hammering our rigg, producing a strange hissing sound even overturning the sound of the Aerogen. We are swinging wild. The boat trembles! 03:26 I am tired and maybe I have fallen asleep for some seconds because I produced around 30 pages in this document only with returns ... => I go to bed (More drifting happend while I was asleep and it even continued in the morning ...) All above cases had in common: => No one in trouble gave a correct VHF-message containing the position of the boat and how many people are on the boat => Many people on both sides where not able to speak SLOW and CLEAR and precise or even to repeat their massage => In the communication it was very, very hard to get precise answers (Most communication was done in english. One boat spook spanish and very bad english. The french Coordinator a remarkable good english, but sometimes I thought he did not get the core of the message. During bad receptions nobody was asking yes- or no-questions to make it easier to understand the answer!). => In the Doyle-Guide there is a lifeboat mentioned. I did not quite understood if it is running and Dutch Coastguard made some assistance (the plenty powerboatowners in the bay with up to 900hp on 3 outboarders are only doing swell at daylight) [Update 17.04 from "Aait Vedan": The french rescueboat was on scene helping after 10 minutes sending the first Pan-Pan! (cs: Good to hear: Very quick!!!] => In the Doyle-Guide is not mentioned the quality of the holding => Why not? After speaking to some locals and other boaters it sounded to me that drifting here is not rare! => The neighboursailors offered help either in translations or giving a hand or line or helping as a relay-station The hero of the night for me is the skipper of "Asteroid": First he was doing a great job in communication as Pan-Pan-Relay for "Aait Vedan" and then went in his 15hp-RIB to check the situation on "Nanito" => My DEEP RESPECT. Lessons learned / ToDo´s: A quick thought on Boatnames: I think a short, oneword, unique, easy to understand and spoke in many languages and easy to spell name for a boat helps aswell (Taitonga is with 3 sibles the maximum-length, I consider it easy and it is quite unique). I think not so good examples are "Oachkatzelschwoof" (bawarian for "Squirreltail"/"Eichhörnchenschwanz") (No that is only an example I have never heard of a boatname like this); "Red Boat" (especially if your hull is not red) ... Sunday, 15.04, 04:00 - "Trapped" - (Dagmar) I am nervous, the noise is making me uneasy. Out at sea, the wind would not be as frightning, but inside this lagoon we are kind of trapped. But the good thing is, we only get small waves here. I hope, it will not stay like this for long and that no more boats are getting into distress. As it is arround 06:00 the sun is rising and I think, the gusts are not that strong any more.  Our swingradius in the anchorwatchcircle during constant wind Sonntag, 15.04, 07:00 - "keinen Bock mehr ..." - (Christian) Ich habe gut geschlafen und in dieser Zeit nichts mitbekommen. Die Böen haben bis ca. 30 Knoten und die Sonne scheint => Nicht zu schlecht! Unser Windgenerator läuft auf Hochtouren und trotzdem habe ich nur eine Ladung von 1 bis 2 Amphere! Es sind noch ein paar Boote auf Drift gegangen und auf UKW-Kanal 16 ist jede Menge los. Die Funksprüche sind allerdings manchmal abgehakt und kaum einer so aufgebaut wie ich dies mal in Deutschland gelernt habe... (Einige nennen nicht einmal ihren Bootsnamen ...) und einige sind verrauscht nicht zu verstehen! Zudem hört zumindest eine Marina auf einem amerikanischen Kanal (72a), den wir mit unserer europäischen ICOM-UKW-Anlage überhaupt nicht anwählen können! Wir haben gestern abend einen größeren Einkauf im Supermarkt Grand Marche getätigt und sind dabei fast erfroren => Da gehen wir nicht mehr hin! Der Supermarkt "Market Garden" gefällt uns besser und der US-Supermarkt noch besser! Insgesamt ist einkaufen hier zwar zollfrei, aber tw. teurer als in Antigua und da war es schon teuer! => Die kleinen Supermärkte haben nicht soviel Auswahl und sind von den Preisen m.E. nicht viel anders. Im Baumarkt ACE habe ich zwar eine große Auswahl gehabt, aber die unterschiedlichen Elektro-Anschlüsse konnte ich nicht gebrauchen und alle Bohrer und Schraubenschlüssel waren nicht metrisch! Selbst wenn ich Zollgewinde finde, heißt dies nicht, dass ich diese verwenden kann, weil die Steigung der Züge nicht unbedingt zum europäischen Standard passen => Die unterschiedlichen Systeme nerven genauso wie die unterschiedlichen Einheiten, z.B. US-Gallone, Imp-Gallone, pint, Liter! Und um das Chaos komplett zu machen, ist hier vieles mit drei Währungen ausgezeichnet: US-Dollar, Euro, Niederländische Guilder (NAF). Dieses Währungschaos führte dazu, dass wir beim Chinesensupermarkt rechts neben Waterworld heftig aufs Ohr gehauen wurden (Wahrscheinlich haben wir 1:1 US zu NAF gezahlt, statt 1:ca.1,8) Die Wettervorhersage der Französischen Station kam gerade durch. Wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe, sind 7Bft-Böen weiter zu erwarten! (bis wann?). Es wäre schön, wenn die das auch in englisch wiederholen würden! => Ich wäre jetzt lieber an meinem Schreibtisch in der Bank (Schönen Gruß an Alle !)! Sonntag, 15.04, 16:00 - "So haben wir das nicht gebucht !" - (Christian) Wir haben uns entschieden das Boot nicht in eine Marina zu verlegen! Das Anlegemanöver erscheint uns "uncomfortabler" und unsicherer als hier zu bleiben!!! Ich war gerade bei 6 Bft schwimmen (ohne Sonne kein Vergnügen, da es danach saukalt ist (das Wasser hat mehr als 26 Grad und ist damit akzeptabel). Den Anker habe ich abgetaucht => sieht sehr gut aus! Der Anker hat sich um 120 Grad in die Hauptwindrichtung gedreht und ist dabei nicht geslippt (paßt auch zum Ankeralarm und Trackbild des GPS), sondern er hat sich tiefer eingegraben und liegt ca 20-30 cm unter der Oberfläche. Die Kette hat sich dadurch einen 2-Handtiefen Graben geschaffen, in dem sie bei Böen bis kurz vor den Anker angehoben wird, sonst liegen ca 8-10m auf dem Boden => die nächste Nacht kann kommen => Der Wind soll Dienstag weniger werden ... Mir ist gerade das Inlay oben links, zweites von hinten rausgefallen. Ich hatte gerade ein paar Tropic-Skittels gegessen (die Classics sind weit besser und anscheinend zahnfreundlicher!). Dagmar hat von unserem Zahnarzt Dr. Bebenroth, Bad Homburg (sehr empfehlenswert!) etwas Notfall-Know-How erhalten und wir haben einige Notfallsachen an Bord, so dass sie das Inlay wieder einkleben könnte ... => Besser ich fahre morgen zum lokalen Zahnarzt (Hoffentlich ein Kundiger) => ich werde ihn auch gleich nach meinem kleinen, rechten Zeh fragen, den ich mir vor 2 Wochen fast an einem Decksbeschlag abgerissen habe und der immer noch +30% geschwollener als der Linke ist (Ich habe zudem auch viele Moskitostiche und mir meinen Kopf gestoßen (immer an der gleichen Stelle => Haaransatz vorne => dadurch wird es dort immer lichter ...) => Aua, Aua! => Ich armes altes Wrack ! (Mir fehlt jetzt Josy´s: "Armer schwarzer Kater ...!") Sonntag, 15.04, 19:00 - "Fernsehen fällt aus" - (Christian) Wir haben mal wieder an Claudeline gedacht und wollten heute "Sledge-Hammer" ansehen => dazu fehlt uns allerdings ein passender Adapter zu unserem zusätzlichen 12V-Netzteil! Ich will nicht riskieren, dass der Ankeralarm im Laptop nicht funktioniert, wenn er unter Batterie in den Ruhemodus geht und dadurch die Position verliert! => heute gibt es kein Fernsehen (Der Workaround: Fernsehen auf dem Navicomputer ist Dagmar zu klein!). Der Wind hatte zwischendurch nachgelassen und bläßt wieder mit 24Knoten Sunday, 15.04, 21:00 - "Quite" - (Christian) The wind dropped in the evening and now is back to 24 knots, but the VHF is very quite => I think everyone now has moored their ship safely! => I go to bed and leave the VHF on. Monday, 16.04, 08:30 - "Marigot" - (Christian) The wind dropped in gusts only up to 20knots => that´s fine. I listend to Shrimpys (Mike´s) "St-Martin-Radio-Net" on CH14 at 07:30 local time (Mo-Sa): Very good and helpful (since 8 years)! => Weather, Security / Lost and Found, Arrivals and Departures, Parcel and Swap, Generell Announcements. Maybe someone wants to swap our Raymarine Charts tomorrow? We went to Marigot to give him a visit and our laundry and found out that he speaks german => he´s originate from Austria and moved to St Martin after 20 year in Africa. Mike brought Chris from "Scots-free" to the dentist "Stephane Moiroud", Residence "Le Madison", Bellevue Marigot (Tel.0590 879281) and we got a chance to join him. 75 Euros later my inlay was replaced (Our neighbour says: It is even cheaper on the dutch side). Until now I am very satisfied with his work! I wonder how we will get the money back from our insurance (Preuss) with the little handwritten receipt! Besides the Dentist is a hardwarestore "Home and Tools", well stocked and with metric ! articles => we invested some money there. The US-Supermarket nearby Shrimpy´s is very well stoked and not a freezing adventure! And Mike from the weldingcompany next door will do our battery-compartment for 50 Euros an hour => not cheap, but ok for us. => Checking all the infrastructure is very, very timeconsuming!!! Tuesday, 17.04, 08:00 - "Lots to read and even more to understand" - (Christian) Days here beginn early (close to sunrise) and end early! (I am still not used to it => I am a nightworker, but that means battery-consumption!) I read the whole day about batteries and for me it is easier to understand something like US-Tax-Law-Articles concerning FATCA=>"Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act" (both subjects are not too easy ...). To buy a battery is sience and to understand or even find the best informations takes ages (or longer!). We would like to get open-cell Trojan Golf-Cart-Batteries which are to high for our compartment. Today I have to find out the wireing of our 3 or 4 battery-charger-regulators to check if there must be something changed or improved. The plan for tomorrow (what I intended to do today aswell...): We will go 08:30 to Budget-Marine to buy some things and check their possibilities for welding and we will leave our gas-bottles with them before 09:00 to be refilled and check mails at Lagoonies and may do the upload of the Antigua-files, download some more battery-informations and read them... Wednesday, 17.04, 08:00 - "Shopping for the boat" - (Dagmar) It was quite a busy day here in St.Martin for us. First thing in the morning was, like always here, the Shrimpys Radio gathering and after that we had a bit of a hurry, also like always, to get to Budget Marine in time for the gas filling. As we arrived we found out that they could not fill our special gas bottles. We had only problems with these- in Spain it was impossible to get them filled, so Ben did it at the ponton by using his big bottle. A bit dangerous... [Christian: I works well !] We have more or less to do it the same way, as our gas-compartment is too small to put the bigger bottles in which are used arround here.So we bought a fiberglass big bottle to store on deck and fill up our little odd 3kg bottles. Because we did not have a suitable connection on board, we bought a gasbottle-hose and adapter for the new gasbottle => so 30US comes to the 140US bottle => cooking is expensive but worth the price! We hope we do not have to buy any other bottles in other countries ... After that we walked to "Lagoonies" a Restaurant/Cafe with WIFI and had a excellent breakfast and really good coffee while surfing on the internet. I checked the book-exchange there and found a lot of german books, so I could get some new stuff. I really like these book-exchanges! Sometimes they even have DVDs. We had to buy more things at Budget so we walked back there and it took us ages to leave the shop with only some plastic-washers and a piece for the tab!! (Christian: Some things are not in stock and some not in the right shelf and some Inox-rings are magnetic!) Going back to Taitonga with the dinghy takes its time and after a quick tea we had to leave again for meeting other cruisers at "Barnacles" (Astrid and Björn from "Buena Vista", Sylvia and Reinhard from "Black Elise"). It is a easy way to meet people and have a good time and a few drinks. As we are new in caribbean waters it is so helpful when more expirienced cruisers are sharing their knowledge with us. We are thankful for that. Thursday, 19.04, 22:00: "Knowledge" - (Christian) We had a wonderful pizza-evening on Taitonga with Sylvia and Reinhard from "Black Elise". They will spend the summer in the south aswell. We learned from them: Freitag, 20.04, 09:00 - "Batterien noch zu kaufen" - (Christian) Ich habe noch nicht beschlossen, welche Batterien wir kaufen werden => wir werden also Anfang nächster Woche immernoch hier sein und die Antigua-Classics nicht sehen ! => Mist Danach ist zwar die Antigua-Sailing-Week, diese interessiert mich allerdings nicht gar so sehr => Fokus auf moderne Yachten und viele Megayachten ... Bei den Batterien habe ich das Gefühl, dass wir nachdem ich mich total mit Batterie-Wissen vollgesogen habe, die nehmen, die wir schon am Anfang nehmen wollten ... => Wofür also schlau machen statt zu relaxen??? => Ich will es einfach wissen und mich gut damit fühlen (zur Zeit nervt es mich gewaltigst!) [=> ich bin wohl noch zu deutsch]! Samstag, 21.04, 19:00 - "Philipsburg" - (Dagmar) Wir haben wiedermal was am Dinghydock ins Wasser fallen lassen, diesmal war es allerdings Christian: Unser Schloss für die Dinghykette. Da es schon dunkel wurde, ging an diesem Abend nix mehr und wir mussten am nächsten Tag die Auffindeaktion starten. Christian hat sich den ungefähren Ort gemerkt und ich hab dann nach einiger Zeit einen roten Schimmer entdeckt und wir konnten das halb im Dreck eingesunkene Schloss bergen. Es ist nicht magnetisch und ein (sein) langer Arm reichte! Inox steht darauf, es ist aber Messing und rostet daher nicht! Wir haben uns dann per Bus die Hauptstadt des niederländischen St. Maarten angeschaut, da gibt´s eine Front Street mit Luxusgeschäften, viel Schmuck und Edelsteine, und eine Back Street für Schnäppchenläden mit Klamotten u.ä. Aber der Bringer war es nicht gerade, wir finden die Preise trotz angeblichem duty-free ziemlich hoch, zumindest was den Schmuck betrifft [Christian: z.B. Lupenreine, top wesselton, 5-Karäter:-) ]. Die Klamotten waren nicht unbedingt unsere Kragenweite, daher keine Kaufrauschgefahr. Man kann ja auch nicht wahllos und unbegrenzt Souvenirs auf dem Boot unterbringen, es ist ja eigentlich jetzt schon voll. Und außerdem herrscht anbord Kitschverbot, das schließt die typischen Urlaubsmitbringsel schon mal aus. Flaschenförmige Artikel mit exotischem Inhalt werden dagegen gerne angenommen [Christian: Wir sammeln Hot-Sauces!]. Wir durften bei einer Trommelübung für die Karnevalparade zusehen
Monday, 23.04, 23:00 - "Dinghy" - (Christian) I installed a flashlight on the outboard and put on some reflektive tape, because here they drive like hell and I think it is very dangerous to go at night. There is a 3 or 5 knot-Speed-limit in the lagoon, but some idiots are adding a zero to the 3 (as some to the 5). In the Yamaha-Shop in Marigot I asked for a maintanance-quote of our outboard (5hp / approx. 100Hours?) => It will cost approx. 150E. Because I fear that the technic-guys are working like the sales-guy, I will try do it on my own! => I hope the manual is good enough (or I have to buy a book)! We have spend a lovely eving on "Black Elise 2" a Hanse 40 => very pleasent and fine food! Dienstag, 24.04, 22:00 - "Baumarkt - ausverkauft" - (Christian) Ich gehe davon aus, dass es hier noch gute Möglichkeiten zum einkaufen gibt, die weiter südlich sehr spärlich sein werden. Heute war wieder Baumarkt angesagt und ich wollte u.a. 8 Gartenlaternen (Ankerlichtersatz und zum Basteln) kaufen, die wir als gut getestet haben => AUSVERKAUFT!!! Ich bin mit 3-4 Sachen statt über einem Dutzend entäuscht wieder heimgefahren! => Morgen oder übermorgen werden wir es grenzüberschreitend in Sint Maarten es nochmal probieren. Die Batterien habe ich noch nicht entschieden => hatte keine Lust und es ausgehalten! Morgen gehen wir nochmal surfen und entscheiden dann. Wenn die Dinger vor dem Wochenende installiert sind, ist es auch gut! Unser Mastervolt (Dagmar: "Ein Wunder ist geschehen") meldet seit Sonntag: Batteriekapazität 100%!!! (statt 50%) => M.E. Zeit die alten Bleiplatten wegzuwerfen, In Gran Canaria war es auch so und bei Belastung ist es damals schnell auf 80% gesunken und kam danach nie wieder höher ... Die Preis-Unterschiede zwischen dem französischen Teil und dem holländischen Teil habe ich noch nicht 100% verstanden. Zwischenstand: Französisch: Besser und günstiger für Brot, Käse, Wurst, Fleisch, Wein und für Schweißarbeiten. Niederländisch: Besser und günstiger für Schiffszubehör und hier treffen sich die Segler in den Kneipen (Von Sociallife in Marigot haben wir bisher wenig gehört). Wir müssen irgendwie mal die Insel besichtigen, statt nur am Boot zu basteln und einzukaufen... Ich schätze, dass wir noch bis Ende nächster Woche in St Martin liegen bleiben werden [Christian am 06.06: lustige Fehlschätzung]. Für Sonntag ist mal wieder viel Wind bis 24 Knoten angesagt. Wir werden morgen oder übermorgen nochmal überlegen einen anderen Parkplatz zu suchen. Dagmar liest sich durch unserer Reiseführer und schreibt auf, wo wir hinfahren werden. Mir ist es ziemlich egal => ich bin mit allem einverstanden, wo wir einfach hinsegeln und sicher ankern können (und einigermaßen Frischzeug einkaufen können) und es schön ist! Thursday, 26.04, 18:00 - "Water" - (Christian) Today we filled up our tank and our jerry-cans with water (400L for 9 Euro => compared with the prices in Germany this is a lot!) in the "Marina Port la Royale" and bought 2 dozens of beer cans => we do not drink beer, so it is for guests and to swap if some locals will come to the boat and offer us fruits, fish etc., which is common in the islands south of us. After watering we got a "new" anchorage about 50m away from our good old anchorage and digged the anchor in with 2300 rpm, and check-dived it. For sunday the weatherforecast predicted 25knots from E. I went to the "Atlantic-Crosser-Forum" at "Laggoonies" (a bit late), and I think it was quite good to give all the crews (about 60 people were listening!) a good opportunity to get informations from the expierienced sailors and meet for staying in contact during the passage. Laggoonies and Barnacles are the most commen bars for cruiser-social-life here. It helps if you know whom to contact (=> Mike from Shrimpys knows a lot and the cruisers-net will add the rest) e.g.:  Our new (and old) parkingplace with new anchorwatchcircle Donnerstag, 26.04, 22:00 - "Banalitäten ? ! ?" oder "Das Leben der Anderen" - (Christian) Auszug aus unserem Leben: Dagmar sagte gerade: "Die Karotten hier sehen immer so müde aus!" => Ich bin eher der Meinung die sehen total zugekifft aus => völlig ermattet und labberig! Dagegen sind Papayas bisher immer gut gewesen, auch wenn einige schon müllig aussahen. Sehr vieles, was (besonders) ich schreibe ist "Banales" aus unserem Leben, wie es gerade passiert oder auch wie es sich anfühlt und ggf., manchmal verschachtelt geschrieben (ich liebe es!) sowie sehr ausführlich (dies sagt zumindest Dagmar, wobei ich mir wünschen würde, Dagmar würde mehr schreiben ....). Für die Eiligen gibt es die Abkürzung zu den Bildern am Anfang des Textes :-). Ich schreibe diese "Banalitäten", da es uns auch sehr gefällt Geschichten aus dem Leben zu hören, z.B. von zuhause per Mail => z.B. ob das Auto noch lebt; der Schwimmteich schon erste Gäste hatte (und wenn´s ne Ente wäre), die Firma gut läuft, die Kollegen mal wieder stressen (vielleicht die "üblichen Verdächtigen"?), die Firma neue Produkte auflegt, das Kind in die Pupertät wächst, etc. usw. => Für uns ist dies ein Kontakt zur "normalen" Welt schön und erdend => außerhalb des immer wieder "Hält der Anker noch oder treiben wir auf die Steine" (was zur Zeit auch für uns noch sehr spannend ist und für andere so banal, dass sie bei 30 Knoten Wind gut schlafen können...). Extrem hilfreich und für unsere Kalibrierung extrem wichtig (und beruhigend!!!) sind uns Gespräche vor Ort mit anderen Seglern (die zwangsläufig :-) mehr Erfahrungen als wir haben. Wir lernen immer wieder, dass unsere anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten, bezüglich Boot und Selbstverständnis sowie Wohlbefinden, völlig normal sind und es noch viel schlimmer sein könnte ... (=> "Das Leben ist kein Ponyhof", wie Ex-Kollege Roger zu sagen pflegte, wobei es hier allerdings nicht um Job, sondern tw. um sehr existenzielle Themen geht!). Friday, 27.04, 19:00 - "Again: Shopping" - (Dagmar) We heard about the holidays on the durch side of St.Maarten and wanted to provision for the next 4-5 days, but then I heard, that on the french side is business as usual on these days. The double-nationality of this island is irritating me a lot. As I broke my last strong sewing-needle and the threat is coming to an end, we poped in two sailmaker-workshops on the dutch side and talked some time with the very nice people there. They could not help me with needles, as they have only industrial ones and the threat is coming only in very big quantities (kilometers!), which is not usefull for me. But they told me several places where I can try to buy my desired gear. We are thinking about getting another light foresail, a gennaker or blister instead of our spinnaker. I would like to have a sail without needing a spinnaker-boom, as it is not the easiest manover shifting the heavy, unhandy boom from one side to the other, especially at night. But this is another expensive desire and we will check the prices and think some time about it. Because Christian wanted to visit a shop called "Cost-U-Less" (!) we took the long walk to the Grande Marche, Cole Bay again. But there is no "Cost-U-Less", the shop is only in Philipsburg besides their Grande Marche! At the evening we had Astrid and Björn from Buena Vista (www.sy-buenavista.de) for dinner and it was a pleasure to talk, eat and drink with them. We used once more our little handy gasgrill, as we do not have one of these famous Magma-Grills on our boat. About personel shopping: you do not need many things to wear on bord, but bikinis are always a necessity! It`s like shoes at home: you can never have enough of it. On the french side in Royal Marina and Marigot they have some really good stocked shops for bikinis, I saw very nice ones, but the prices are not as beautiful as the designs. Again: I do not see the dutyfree-difference in that. I could not get so much variety in bikinis at home, but I could get these prices. Maybe I find a bargain some day.... Samstag, 28.04, 02:35 - "Ankeralarm" - (Christian) Die Böen hämmern mal wieder in das Rigg, obwohl erst für morgen wieder Wind bis 25 Knoten angesagt ist. Durch die Berge vor uns wird m.E. der normal vorhergesagte Wind um bis zu 5-10 Knoten verstärkt, mal abgesehen davon der Wind hier nahezu permanent um 45 Grad dreht und die Boote näher am Berg anders liegen, als die Boote kurz vor der Insel (wie wir) und die Boote weiter zur französischen Grenze liegen wiederum anders. Dagmar wollte, dass wir den Ankeralarm wieder aktivieren => danach haben wir wieder besser geschlafen (update 09:00: Dagmar schläft immer noch).(Dagmar: das stimmt so nicht, ich lag da mit geschlossenen Augen und konnte meinem Körper nicht beibringen, aufzustehen..) Wir fragen hier quasi jeden, welche Ankerart/-gewicht, welches Kettengewicht, wieviel Kette für was für ein schweres Boot mit welchen Aufbauten, er verwendet und haben herausgefunden, dass wir mit unserem 30kg Bügel für unsere wahrscheinlich, vollbeladenen 11-12 Tonnen (netto 8,8t) auf jeden Fall im oberen, gefühlt sicheren Bereich liegen (mal abgesehen von denen, die hier mit 750kg Anker vor Mooring liegen oder vorhaben einen 3-Tonnen-Kiel als Mooring eingraben zu lassen). Wir haben ca. 30 Meter Kette auf 2,5m Wassertiefe draußen (wie viele hier!), was "etwas" über die Lehrbuchmeinung 3-5-fache Wassertiefe hinausgeht => Wenn das immernoch so stupide gelehrt wird, ist das extrem gefährlich, da bei niedriger Wassertiefe z.B. weniger Gewicht dämpft und vor allem die Qualität des Ankergrundes ein sehr wichtiger Faktor ist (hier bewachsener gröberer Muschelsand mit feinem Schlamm/Mud durchsetzt => keine Topqualität, aber ok), genauso wie Schiffsgewicht und noch mehr die Angriffsfläche des Schiffes für den Wind! Wichtig ist auch, ob der Nachbar vor einem seinen Anker einfährt oder nicht und dann ggf. auf einen treibt (Nicht jeder hier testet seinen Anker!!!)! Viele von den alten Hasen waren auch schon mal auf Drift gegangen, meist nach dem Durchziehen eines Unwetters, wenn der Wind um 180 Grad dreht! Bei schlechtem Wetter liegt deshalb der Motorschlüssel bei uns auf der Treppe oder steckt im Zündschloß und die Fernbedienung für die Ankerwinch ist auch in der Nähe. Samstag, 28.04, 08:35 - "Karnelvalplanung" - (Christian) Hier fängt am Wochenende der Karneval an; es scheint hier teilweise etwas krass zuzugehen, da am Wochenende um 04:00 morgens schon ein Event startet (den wir uns nicht ansehen werden!) und die Geschäfte, bei denen ich einkaufen wollte! Samstag, Montag und Dienstag geschlossen haben! Wir werden versuchen am Montagmorgen den Umzug (10:00 Uhr !) anzusehen und am Mittwoch einzukaufen. Da Alkohol auf der Insel zollfrei ist, weiß ich noch nicht, wie sich dies auf den Karneval auswirkt, wobei ich glaube das da einige im Graben liegen werden ... Monday, 30.04, 21:00 - "Carnival" - (Dagmar) Today is Queen Beatrix` Birthday and Holiday on the dutch side plus the day of the big Carneval-Parade. As we heard before, it is wise not to come too early, we went to Philipsburg arround eleven (announced starttime was 10:00) and strolled through the streets. We saw, that the preparations for the parade, like little sheds at the street and in the Carnival-Village, were just at the beginning. So we knew it would take more time for the parade to arrive. We had a tastefull meal from the barbecue and looked for a shady spot to watch the parade. The first truck with a band (very, very loud ) came at around 14:30 and the end was at 5pm. After every "band-truck" came groups of caribbean dancers in bright-coloured, exotic and fantastic costums, a bit like in the brazilian Carneval. It`s hard to describe it, better get an impression as you watch the fotos and videos. The Parade
Monday, 30.04, 22:00 - "Karneval" - (Christian) Spektakulär => super anzuschauen aber brutal laut => Ich habe mir Taschentücherfetzen ins Ohr gesteckt! Vor ein paar Tagen dachte ich schon, dass mein Tinitus besser oder gar fast weg wäre. Im Moment merke ich ihn wieder deutlich! Dancing on the streets
Dienstag, 01.05, 15:00 - "Tag der Arbeit - weitere Planung" - (Christian) Auch hier arbeitet am Tag der Arbeit kaum jemand! => Ich habe den paradoxen Sinn dieses Tages noch nie durchdrungen! => ich habe auf unserem Boot Wartungsarbeiten durchgeführt! Einen Monat noch bis zum Anfang der Hurrikan-Saison! Die Stärke der Saison wird von der NOAA zur Zeit eher als schwach vorhergesagt, da die Wassertemperaturen im Atlantik nicht so hoch wie sonst sind! Zur Zeit haben wir noch 15-22 Knoten Wind, bis zum Beginn der nächsten Woche ist schwachwindig angesagt. Unser Plan: Diese Woche Batterien und Mastcheck, Wochenende tauchen, dann nach Saba, dann nach Guadeloupe zum tauchen in den Jaques Cousteau-Nationalpark, anschließend nach Dominica, um die Insel anzusehen (ggf. zum Einkaufen von Lebensmitteln etc. noch nach Martinique => Da bekommt man noch alles zu einigermaßen moderaten Preisen) und dann runter in die Tobago Cays, um danach länger in Grenada zu bleiben => das hört sich für einen Monat schon wieder stressig an! Wednesday, 02.05, 09:00 - "Environment" - (Christian) A good one from Mike of Shrimpy´s: "This planet is most probably the only one in the universe with chocolate on it, so look after it!" On the Atlanic-Passage we only produced 2 and a half bags full of rubbish in 23 days (we sorted out the organicstuff for the fishs). But now we have this amount of trash in 5 days! Furtherone we are consuming water very fast (100L since the last refill)! Wednesday, 02.05, 16:00 - "Wings for the Outboarder" - (Christian) On monday I was invited to drive "Black Elise´s" new Dinghy with a 15hp Outboard => what a difference to our dinghy!!! (2CV/Mercedes) => It is fast, comfortable and it is very dry!!!!! I installed Doel-fins on our 5hp Yamaha Outboard-Motor so the fuelconsumption should be reduced and boat should plane earlier and be maybe faster with two onboard. It took not 15 minutes for the installation, as said in the manual, but about an hour for me. The first testdrive on my own: Not realy much difference! The first testdrive together with Dagmar: Planing with two on board was not possible and it is bloody wet like always! => Schade, what a pitty! => We think of getting a new dinghy, but than to hoist in in davits on the archs, but than we have to extend our arch and have to prolong all the cables in the arch => Oh, Oh => That would be a big project =>Maybe we stay wet in our small dinghy (We heard that nearly everywhere exept St. Martin the ways are shorter (and normally the water is warm)...). We serviced the outboarder: Took off the propeller (and did not found the shearpin), greased some parts and wanted to replace the gear-Lube => I was not able to open the screws => Tomorrow I will buy a really big screwdriver! Saturday, 05.05, 11:00 - "Things to organize" - (Christian) Yesterday we went shopping to Philipsburg (needles, thread, provisioning, boatstuff from the Warehouses) and the shop Cost-U-Less (good prices) was supposed to deliver 3 bags to the Bar Barnacles at 13:30. At 14:20 I phoned them => They mixed up next to "Grand Marche" with "Gourmet Marche"!! But the service is good and the parcels arrived 10 minutes later! Today was maritim-fleemarket at Toby´s (Time-Out-BoatYard) and some items seemed to be coming directly out of the rubbishdump, but if you have an old boat you might need exactly these parts, because you can not get them new anylonger! We bought some rope, a washing-ball (which is supposed to work without soap!) and a fuel-additiv. Instead of going to the shipchandlers in the afternoon I wrote an response-email concerning business in Germany, this shows we are not out of world! Dagmar´s Maestrocard from Deutsche Bank still does not work => they still do not get it working and wants us to send faxes with original signature (which you can not recognize on a fax) or use the "secure" internetbanking-correspondence on a publlic, insecure hotspot => This sucks! All we heard from them is that they do not understand our situation and the information they gave us is not logical consistent! Sonntag, 06.05, 11:00 - "Schwül" - (Christian) Kein Wind, Wolken, Regen, 26-27 Grad, Luftfeuchtigkeit 100% => nicht schön und wir laden gerade die Batterien mit dem Motor => laut und noch unschöner Monday, 07.05, 19:00 - "Electric" - (Christian) I crawled inside the boat (not amusing), under the floorplanks, for hours and we sorted out how our powermanagement is done. At budget marine I was "served" by a young, blonde lady not very polite and not very helpful. I will proceed my shopping at Island-Waterworld tomorrow. Tuesday, 08.05, 12:00 - "Dinghyrides" - (Christian) Dagmar took her first ride alone in the dinghy towards France (Today in France is celebrationday of the end of the war) to get some fuel and provisions. We took the dinghy afterwards to Island Waterworld and got some things for the boat before we checked emails at Lagoonies and were eaten up by moskitos! They have battery-operated tennisclubs with high-voltage to kill the beasts => We will buy one or two tomorrow. Dienstag, 08.05, 18:00 - "Nachrichten aus Deutschland" - (Christian) Wir sind hier in einer Art Nachrichtenvakuum: Seit mehr als einem halben Jahr haben wir morgendlich keine Tageszeitung mehr (ich vermisse meine FAZ)! Und hier vor Ort gibt oft nur lokale Zeitungen oder "Tageszeitungen mit Bildern" in einer anderern als der gewohnten Qualität. Nachrichten (ich vermisse Marietta Slomka) sehen wir extrem selten über einen Livestream, weil die Internetverbindungen extrem ruckelig sind! Ich habe heute Nachrichten von meinen Kollegen in der Bank erhalten: Es ist schön mal wieder angenabelt zu werden und Neues zu erfahren. Leider wurde die diesjährige Tantiemezahlung generell stark gekürzt (=> Kein Wunder, da ich ja nur wenige Monate zum Ergebnis beitragen konnte ... ;-), das ist mehr als traurig! Dienstag, 08.05, 20:00 - "Die Essenssituation" - (Christian) Das Essen auf St Martin ist gut (international) und die Einkaufsmöglichkeiten super (international und französisch)! => Käse auf den Punkt gereift und vor allem aus Frankreich zu Preisen, die in Deutschland deutlich teurer sind => Vive la France (leider trinke ich keinen Wein, also alles Käse) => Sogar leckeres Sauerteigbrot !!! gibt es in einer Bäckerei => Auf den anderen Inseln ist dagegen labberiges Toast angesagt => "Schwammbrot" => dies wird auf diese Insel sogar extra aus den USA eingeflogen, für die Amerikaner !!! => Das erscheint mir krank!!! Leider haben wir in den Bäckerei keine Frischhefe erhalten => auch diese backen mit Trockenhefe! Mit der Trockenhefe wird das Brot manchmal nicht so fluffig, also verdoppelt Dagmar oft den Hefeanteil. Mittwoch, 09.05, 11:00 - "Regen ?!?" - (Christian) Morgen ist hoffentlich mal ausgiebiger Duschtag => bis 40 Liter/m² Regen sind angesagt (mal schauen)! Wir werden unseren Hauptwassertank versuchen zu füllen (ca. 100Liter fehlen). Beim letzten Mal Regenguss füllten wir 10 Kanister á 5 Liter in 20 Minuten)! Dagmar bastelt zur Zeit daran einen Sonnenschutz des Hauptdeckes zu einem Wassersammler-/Sonnenschutzkombi umzubauen. Ich werde dazu noch Streben kaufen, damit wir das Sonnensegel dann horizontal spannen und das Wasser direkt in den Tank leiten können. Ich werde zusätzlich noch einen Trichter mit Schlauchsystem aus einem alten Eimer basteln, um über unser Vordecksonnensegel unsere neuen Wassserkanister zu füllen, die wir im Ankerkasten plazieren werden.  Ich habe mal wieder unseren Anker geschnorchelt: Unverändert und nur noch ein Bügelrest schaut aus dem Grund. Die Wasserschichtung nach den letzten Regengüssen in der Lagune ist sehr interessant: Kaltes Wasser oben, ab 1,50m Tiefe schön warmes Wasser! Das Wasser ums Boot rum, hier in der großen Lagune, lädt nicht direkt zum Reinspringen ein, alle Abwässer der Boote landen da ja auch drin (26 Grad mit 100% Feuchtigkeit und dazu 26-27 Grad Lufttemperatur mit 75% Feuchtigkeit). Wir schnorcheln immer direkt nach dem Ankern einmal zum Anker hin und schauen, ob er gut gegriffen hat, aber danach gehen wir selten ins Wasser (Das wird aber anders wenn wir in Buchten mit mehr Wasseraustausch und weniger Booten ankern!). Wednesday, 09.05, 20:00 - "Expiriences !" - (Christian) We spend a lot of our time on getting informations about boattopics, maintanance, places, do´s and dont´s etc. to get us organized and to calibrate our recognition, thinking and acting. Until now we have met so many friendly and helpful people it is amazing and enriches our life! We learned that our difficulties at the beginning are quite normal and that nearly everyone had equivalent expiriences or even little catastrophies in series. Unfortunately it is not completly possible to avoid all unpleaseant situations, but we now have very good examples of surviving and how to deal with them! Everyone whom we speak to is giving us "greenhorns" their stories and advices, informations, tipps and tricks. Even we have recieved emails with these contents from Europe (which is in that case very narrow)! To all of you, deep out of our heart: Thank you very much !!!!!! Wednesday, 09.05, 19:30 - "Books and media" - (Dagmar) Christian is preparing our meal, I am very hungry and have to wait, so I can write something meanwhile. About reading, books and entertainment onboard: In my opinion you cannot overload a boat with books, in reality you will always have too less. I like to read a lot, as we do not have many appointments or going out every night. There is a cinema on the dutch side, but right now, they don`t have attractive films on their shedule. At the weekends we hear sometimes noise of nightclubs somewhere, but I was never in the mood to go to one of these places. Sometimes we watch films or series on our PC (mostly US-Series like "The Mentalist" or "Big Bang Theory"). We like to meet with the sailor-couples we met here, having a drink and a chat on one of our boats or like last sunday: enjoy icecream at "The Carousel". This are the evening and weekends attractions, and so there is enough time for reading in between. I try to find a bookexchange in every marina or harbour, here in St.Martin is one with a good variety at Lagoonies. They have also german books and a lot of english ones, most of the time I am too lazy to take up an english book.... Thursday, 10.05, 07:45 - "Saftey-Announcements" - (Christian) St-Martin-Net: An AB-Dinghy was stolen (Which is not uncommen here! Since we are here a couple dinghys and/or outboards were stolen). A dead body was drifting in the lagoon two days ago, it was not identified until now. Yesterday someone broke into a boat, stole some things and made a mess; the owner returning saw a moving flashlight inside and an unknown dinghy outside, took the dinghy and called the coastguard, which arrived 1 hour ! later and found nobody on board. => We are locking our dinghy allready with a 5mm chain at night to the boat and everytime we dock ashore => I will activate our security-system at night (which we did not until now) Mike announced some rain for today, but not up to 40 Liters for today => so no extrem showering today. Donnerstag, 10.05, 19:00 - "IWW und ACE" - (Christian) Ich war beim Schiffsausrüster Island-Waterworld zum einkaufen => das Personal hat sich um mich gekümmert => enttäuschend von ca 12 Positionen habe ich 2 bekommen. => Es ist am Ende der Saison und die Schiffsausrüster haben nicht mehr (oder generell selten?) alles vorrätig, obwohl dies die Zentrallager für mehr als ein Dutzend Shops sind => Warum die auf den Umsatz verzichten ist mir nicht klar, Leute gehen mit 500$ in den Laden und kommen mit 500$ wieder raus, sind unzufrieden und bestellen dann online z.B. bei SVB! Ich war beim Baumarkt ACE (gut sortiert) zum einkaufen => das Personal hat sich um mich nicht so gekümmert => erfrischend: von ca 18 Positionen habe ich 10 bekommen. Ich habe mich richtig gefreut einige Sachen zu finden! Freitag, 11.05, 08:00 - "Regen" - (Christian) Nix war es! Wetter.de für die Karibik ist anscheinend nicht so toll! => Wir werden wieder Wasser im Hafen kaufen. Gestern wurde noch ein Dinghy geklaut: AB, 9ft, 15hp sind sehr beliebt => unseres will (bisher) keiner, da es zumindest für diese Lagoone zu klein erscheint 2,30m mit 5PS trägt es uns bisher überall hin, allerdings bei etwas Wind ist es zu zweit sehr, sehr naß (70cm mehr Länge, mit 10PS mehr und wir blieben trocken)! Freitag, 11.05, 23:00 - "Sundowner" - (Christian) Wir hatten Sylvia mit Reinhard, Astrid mit Björn sowie Jan aus Antigua (überführt gerade eine 80ft-Yacht nach Mallorca) zum Sundowner geladen. Es war ein schöner Abend! Wednesday, 16.05, 14:00 - "Bad mood" - (Christian) Everything is grey today. We had some rainshowers and the windgusts hammerd into the rigg at night (and now). => Our batteries are 100% full again, because of the windgenerator. I am in a bad mood: My favorite new-batteries with 110Ah does not have the Ah hours stated on the pricetag, and the seller was not able to proof the technical data => I did not buy them => I go back to start now and will think about what to do once more in general! We have been to the french side today and returned with 2x25L jerrycans with water for the tank and 3x9L bottled water and 2 breads and 24 can´s of beer (only for guests), some fresh produce from the market and 2 huge bags of clean cloth from the laundry => Our dinghy nearly sank and was dead-slow => Dagmar said: "We will think of a new dinghy!" In St. Martin the theft rate of dinghys is very high: Between 30 and 40 were stolen in the last 30 days!!! => Incredible. Every dinghy we see is looked with a wire or a chain => But with a big cablecutter that is nothing! Yesterday we wanted to leave our gasbottle for a refill at Budgets => Not possible to leave it over night in a secure place => Very bad service! The staff (especially their attitude) there should be trained in selling => I am convinced I could do most of their job easely better. Wednesday, 16.05, 14:00 - "Front-Office" or "Good to have a Mum" - (Christian) Thank you very much Mum for careing about us and our stuff at home !!! Without you it would be very difficult to organize our things in Germany! Friday, 18.05, 15:00 - "Batteries" - (Christian) I reviewed the picture of our powermanagement and read once more the manuals => It takes such a long time it is incredibly: Powermanagement on Taitonga I dedided to go on the Exide DC12V115 batteries (115AH), but I just found out that the measurments between the Budget-Marine-Catalog and the Manufacturere-Site differ => If the Manufacturere-Site is correct: they do not fit in our compartment! => I go mad and I will go to Budget to measure the bloody things! My computer-harddisks are nearly full and I have to get some more 2,5´´-HD´s for backup´s so driving to Philipsburg is on our list. Saturday, 19.05, 10:00 - "Crash" - (Christian) We bought a 1 TB 2,5´´ Harddisk for 140$ and I am glad I did the backup at night! My computer crashed after cleaning it with Glary Utilitys and it does not start! I hope I can fix it. Dienstag, 22.05, 21:00 – "Das tägliche Leben" - (Dagmar) Die eine Seite der Lagune ist französisch, die andere niederländisch und so gibt´s auch 2 Währungen, bzw. 3 denn der US-Dollar gilt überall auch. Ist ganz schön verwirrend und unpraktisch. Da wir für die Karibik ein ziemlich kleines Dinghy besitzen und dabei auch leicht untermotorisiert sind, ist es immer überlegenswert, wann wir wohin zum Einkaufen/Sachen erledigen fahren. Denn je nach Wind- und Wellenrichtung können wir wählen zwischen etwas nass oder komplett durchgetränkt werden. Wir nehmen manchmal wasserdichte Hosen und Jacken mit, aber die müssen wir dann durch die Gegend schleppen, denn im Dinghy kann man nicht gut was liegen lassen (die Diebstahlrate ist zu groß!). Ist halt umständlicher als mit dem Auto. Ein größeres Dinghy mit dem wir zu zweit gleiten könnten, wäre sehr schön, dann ist das Nasswerden kein Problem mehr, außer es regnet natürlich. Was auch immer wieder vorkommt und wofür wir ja jetzt unsere Sonnensegel zum Wasserauffangen vorbereitet haben. Trotz allem ist unser Dinghy bisher durchaus willig und bewältigt grosse Zuladungen, wenn wir Süsswasser bunkern oder einkaufen gehen. Da wir ja nicht für jedesmal Wasser tanken in eine Marina fahren wollen, nehmen wir unsere Kanister ins Dinghy und füllen die irgendwo auf. Mal sehen wie das in Zukunft mit dem Regenwasser sammeln so klappt. Für mich ist das Wetter hier schon grenzwertig heiß, ich schlafe sehr schlecht, weil Hitzestau in der Kajüte ist. Und der Sommer kommt ja erst noch. Wir denken also auch an Ventilatoren und Klimaanlage (Christian: ... und ein langes Stromkabel bis zum nächsten Landstrom ...). Insbesondere das Kochen oder Backen ist unangenehm, weil man zusätzlich Hitze produziert. Also häufiger an Deck grillen. An Land essen ist auch so eine Sache, denn besonders zur Sundowner-Zeit ist auch Moskito-Zeit und das treibt einen eher wieder auf s Boot wo zum Glück meist eine Brise weht. Apropos Restaurants: Mann, was gäbe ich für einen guten Nespressokaffee oder italienischen Espresso! (Kaffeemäßig scheint hier eher ein US-amerikanischer Einfluss vorzuherrschen.) Nun müssen wir uns bald entscheiden, wohin wir im Juli unser Boot legen für die heiße Hurrikanphase und wohin wir danach fliegen um etwas Landurlaub zu machen: Mittel und Südamerika sind so gross, da fällt die Auswahl schwer. So ohne permanentes Internet ist es ganz schön umständlich alles zu organisieren. Thursday, 24.05, 18:00 – "Holes" - (Christian) We work on the boat doing improvements and it is incredible how fast it goes: A snail is much faster than our proceedings! Dagmar is getting a hole into our sunshade to fit in a funnel, so we can catch water during the ´next showers. I drill holes in the outsidelockers for secure storage of jerrycans and divetanks and I drill holes into the interior to install 12V sockets. I am glad, when we are 80% ready (whenever this is)! Saturday, 26.05, 15:00 - "Batteries" - (Christian) We decided after days/weeks of research to buy the Exide Nautilus 115AH open cell lead-acid. Our battery-compartment and our chargers have not to be changed and the amphere-hours are increased nearly 30% from 450ah to 575ah. => The measurement-informations in the budget-catalog are wrong! => I had to cut a bit of the posts off! The batteries were delivered a couple of days before but we installed them today, because until now we used the inverter a lot for sewing, drilling etc. The wind is only 10-15knots and there are some clouds, so the energy production is not fantastic => The old batteries went to 55%, but now we start with 100% capacity. It took the whole day for the installation, because we had to shorten the terminals! I am very happy that we do have new batteries! => And now we do have to think about some more solarpanels ... Monday, 28.05, 15:00 - "Diving" - (Christian) Because our last dive is some years ago, we did a two-tank-dive with "Ocean Explorers" to get back on track with our diving skills. It was very nice and easy! Astrid is a great Diveguide! More or less we had on our mind to do our first dives in the pacific, but I am glad we started again! Monday, 28.05, 16:00 - "Südwärts" - (Christian) Wir haben von der Insel in mehr als einen Monat kaum etwas gesehen, was ich schade finde (Der Norden erscheint mir landschaftlich interessanter). St Martin war ein Arbeitsaufenthalt, bei dem wir allerdings auch eine schöne Zeit hatten. Unsere Einkaufsliste war vor St. Martin von 35 auf 80 Positionen angeschwollen und in St. Martin weiter gewachsen. Wir sind jetzt wieder zurück bei ca 50 Positionen => das paßt einigermaßen => Einiges haben wir einfach nicht bekommen, einiges auf unserer Wunschliste muß noch reifen und bei einigen anderen Dingen wollen wir entweder noch nicht investieren oder wollen aus Platzgründen nicht noch mehr an Bord nehmen oder etwas bestehendes rauswerfen ... Jetzt müssen wir nur noch einiges installieren und dann Solarpanelle kaufen .... Ich bin froh weiterzufahren, da ich das Suchen und Einkaufen leid bin sowie auf die Lagune keine Lust mehr habe. Die Wege sind weit, das Wasser nicht brilliant klar und wir haben etwas Bewuchs am Boot. Unser Trilux33-Antifouling ist noch neu und wirkt, was wir in einem direktem Vergleich zum Bewuchs an unserem Dinghy feststellten: Nach 3 Wochen seit dem letzten Abschaben der Seepocken haben wir diesmal ca. einen halben 10L-Eimer voll abgeschabt! Wir werden morgen zum Tauchen nach Saba fahren, und dann weiter nach Guadeloupe zum tauchen (und weiter einkaufen), danach steht Dominica auf dem Plan.
